Realme 2 Review : Cheapest smartphone with a Notch display under 10k

When oppo launched its Sub-Brand “Realme” in India with their first smartphone Realme 1, they got a huge success even though it was a new brand. Since then the model has turned out to be a distinct entity and has now introduced its successor “Realme 2”. The device comes with a notch at a price point of Rs.8,990, it is launched in two variants one with 3GB of ram with 32GB storage and another one with 4GB of ram and 64GB of storage. In this review, we’ll focus on the Diamond Black Realme 2 variant with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal memory.

Let’s have a look at its features:

Following the trend of their previous series and inspiration from Oppo’s smartphones. Realme 2 has the same Diamond cut design on the back with a weight of approximately 168gm and the dimensions 156.2*75.6*8.2. It has 88.5% Screen to body ratio with a Notch above. The phone is packed between a composite material back and 2.5D front glass along with a matte finish body. The device features 15 tangent planes carved on the back body, which gives a premium Design for youth generation.

It Sports a 6.2 inch notch screen with a resolution of 720 x 1520 pixels, Realme 2 offers its users a greater larger than life display experience. This increased screen to body ratio ensures that video streaming, gaming and capturing life’s moments is a complete visual delight.

On the front of the phone it features a notch design on the top with the selfie camera and the earpiece side by side within the notch while on the bottom the speaker, a micro-USB port, a microphone  and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Along the left side of the phone body lie the dual nano-SIM card slot and the volume buttons whereas the right side carries the power button. The buttons around the frame have a nice tactile feel to it and the fingerprint sensor on the back is extremely fast at unlocking the device. The Realme 2 has a sturdy build to it and it can standout during occasional drops and pressure.

Talking about camera of the Smartphone it comes with 13+2 MP Rear Camera with  LED Flash & 8 MP  Selfie camera. HDR, Time-Lapse, Video, Photo, Portrait, Sticker and Pano are the options that are available when you open up the camera application. The camera app has a iOS-like UI so if you’re familiar with how things work on an iPhone then you should feel right at home with the Realme 2. Shutter speed is also very fast. It performs well in good lighting conditions (similar to the Realme 1) and additionally it give some decent bokeh shots thanks to the secondary camera. In low lightning conditions there is a little pixelation in the images taken in Normal mode of the smartphone.

Coming to the front camera inside the notch, it is an 8 MP camera unit with an f/2.2 aperture. Selfies taken from Realme 2 are decent, background blur is processed via software and it works well in day light conditions. There are features like AI Beautification, stickers, front camera HDR and bokeh mode in the front camera as well. Both the front and the rear camera can record upto to 1080p at 30fps.

Here are some sample shots taken from realme 2 camera in indoor and outdoor lighting conditions

The smartphone is a budget category smartphone so company can only give a cheaper processor at this price segment. The smartphone respond well to any command or input. I didn’t noticed any lag in the device. Apps run efficiently and quickly. The phone does not heat up in day to day tasks or even in light gaming.

It is powered by Snapdragon 450 processor which is not powerful but it can control your daily tasks easily and it is power efficient as well, While the same processor could be seen in smartphones which are priced near the Rs. 20,000-mark.  When it comes to gaming I played PUBG in Realme 2 in low graphic settings and it is playable but sometimes there are little frame drops in the gameplay.

Coming to the software part, the Realme 2 runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with ColorOS 5.1 on top and it comes with many features like Smart Assistant, Game Mode, split-screen multitasking along with some security layers. This security layers works in Payments app like paytm during payment. The face unlock works quite fast as same as Realme 1 facial unlocking system. They have provided a fingerprint sensor at the back which is also very fast and accurate.

In this department the phone works well, it has a 4320 mAh battery which easily gives you a day and a half of usage. I am pretty impressed with the battery life of this phone, although it doesn’t supports fast charging and it takes about two and a half hour to completely charge it from 0-100%. With normal usage like 2-3 hours of social media surfing, some gaming, online video surfing and around 3 hours of calling it lasts about more than a day. You guys will also be impressed with its battery life.

The phone offers these security options: fingerprint sensor, face unlock and passcode. Apart from these, the Smart Lock feature allows you to keep the device unlocked in trusted locations like home, office etc. All the security features worked well. Some other features are Assistive Ball, Smart Driving, Smart Call and Smart Assistant. There is a Clone Phone app in which you can transfer all the data from one phone to another.

The realme 2 is the first phone under 10k to have a notch display and it is feature packed as well. If you want a smartphone with great battery life, good build quality, great design and Fast fingerprint and face unlock then The Realme 2 is the smartphone for you. If you are a gamer and want a phone with decent gaming capability then you can go for Realme 1 and If you own a Realme 1, there is no point of upgrading to the Realme 2 is a downgrade in some departments but still it is one the best phone you can buy right now under Rs 10,000.
