Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 full review : Powerhouse in a sleek body

Asus Zenfone max pro M1 was launched in India on 26th of july 2018, at the launch they launched three variants of the phone. Here i will talk about 6GB Ram variant of Asus zenfone max pro m1 which comes with improved cameras both for the rear and front. This was followed with the Zenfone 5z, unarguably the most cost-effective premium phone that was in direct competition with the OnePlus 6.

I have been using the new Zenfone Max Pro model for almost a week and here’s my take on the Asus mid-range phone and it competes with smartphones like Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro, Oppo RealMe 1, Huawei Honor 9N and several other good mid-range phones.

Unboxing And What’s Inside the Box

Inside the box, we get the phone itself, Sim-Ejector tool, micro-USB cable and a charger (5 Volts and 2 Ampere). There is also usual documentation that we can safely keep in the box for a later reading.

Design & Display

The Zenfone Max Pro (6 GB RAM) variant looks and feels the same as the standard model. The phone is not very bulky, despite having a massive 5000 mAH capacity battery. It is not fully metal Unibody as it has plastic on the top and bottom on the back and has a rear camera with flash and a fingerprint sensor at the center of the phone. When held in hand, I felt the premium quality of the material used on the rear-side cover. It has a smooth finish and offers a good grip as well.

On the front of the phone it carries a 5.99-inch full-HD+ notch-less display with aspect ratio of 18:9, which makes the screen content pretty immersive. The outdoor visibility is also satisfactory. For added convenience it offers Night mode and manual color temperature adjustment settings.

As far as the performance is concerned, the 6GB RAM variant of the smartphone is similar to its younger variants. The only difference is Ram and Front & Rear cameras, all the other specifications are same on all models. This 6 GB ram variant performs well in day to day usage. It  managed to perform well against power-intensive apps and heavy daily usage. Heavy games such as Asphalt 9 and PUBG ran without any lag giving an excellent gaming experience.

Snapdragon 636 powering this smartphone works perfectly with stock android, even after gaming and high-end usage it doesn’t heats up which keeps thermals in control. As far as Benchmark scores are concerned it scored around 113348 in AnTuTu.

Now lets talk about its camera, not only performance even in camera department it works well. It has a vertically stacked dual cameras on the rear with a 16MP primary with f/2.0 aperture and a 5MP depth sensing sensor with f/2.4, 1.12µm. The front camera has also been improved as compared to the previous variants, with 16MP sensor for selfies and video calling.

The rear camera on the Zenfone Max Pro M1 6GB variant captures shots with good details and covers more objects in a frame. Focusing speed is also good because of PDAF. There is a drawback in this smartphone which is its Camera application. It’s stock camera app from snapdragon which lacks most of the useful features like Pro mode, beautification, Panorama etc. Also UI of camera app looks outdated, The pixelmaster application which asus gives in their smartphones is a plus point for their smartphones but due to nearly Stock android in Asus zenfone max pro M1 they have to skip it.

Here are some camera samples which you may like.

Software and battery

The Zenfone Max Pro is light and responsive, due to near-stock build for Android 8.1 by Asus. The company claims to update to Android Q in future and timely updates for this smartphone. It has a massive 5000 mAh battery to power this phone, this huge battery backup ensures a seamless experience for the user without the need of charging even after heavy usage. All you have to charge it fully and just forget the charger for a whole day.

With about 1 hour of heavy gaming, web surfing with location turned on and numerous apps running in the background, the phone stands out with nearly 50 percent of the battery. The smartphone also comes with Fast fingerprint sensor and a Face unlock system as well which is quite okay i would say. The sound output from the speakers are very loud and it enhances more with the Max box which comes in the box itself.

Asus zenfone Max Pro M1: Final Verdict.

There are many competitors in the market e.g Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 pro, Realme 1 etc which gives a touch competition to this smartphone but in some departments it beats them. The Zenfone Max Pro M1 6GB variant is a good product from Asus which offers excellent battery backup, improved camera, performance and quality at a price point of Rs 14,999. It has big battery so they should have given a fast charger within the box otherwise if you are looking for a overall good phone then The ASUS Zenfone Max Pro M1 is for you.
